FAQs

What styles of transcription are offered?

There are two main styles of transcription available: “standard verbatim” and “strict verbatim.” Standard verbatim — also known as clean verbatim — means that we type exactly what was spoken, but clean it up slightly. For instance, all non-words (uh’s, um’s), filler words (like’s, you know’s), stutters, and false starts are left out. In strict verbatim, we keep in all those non-essentials.

*Customized style available upon request.

What contributes to
difficult audio?

After reviewing your audio file, a quote
will be provided based on a few factors.
One being the level of audio difficulty.
This can vary for many reasons.
Some things may be out of your control.
But it will be beneficial to keep it in mind.

High ambient noise (e.g. A/C noise, hum)
Noisy background (e.g. high-traffic areas)
Distant speakers (e.g. recorder not close)
Reverberation (e.g. poor room acoustics)
Disturbances (e.g. typing sounds)

Why Em Dash Transcription
over AI speech-to-text software?

Automated speech-to-text software
has improved over the last few years,
but it still doesn’t come close to the
accuracy of a trained transcriptionist.

Substandard audio, heavy accents,
background noise, multiple speakers
are stumbling blocks for AI software.
The transcript produced is an inadequate
representation of the original content.

Poor transcription just adds
frustration and extra work.
A well-trained transcriptionist
will always provide value.
